How to use it

  1. Enter your total annual gross income.
  2. Select your filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, or Head of Household).
  3. Leave itemized deductions at 0 to use the standard deduction automatically, or enter your total itemized deductions if they exceed the standard.
  4. Read your estimated federal tax, taxable income, effective rate, and marginal bracket.

2024 Standard Deductions

Single filers: $14,600. Married Filing Jointly: $29,200. Head of Household: $21,900. These amounts reduce your taxable income before brackets are applied.

Effective vs. Marginal Rate

Your marginal rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income. Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your total income — it is always lower than your marginal rate.

The formula

US federal income tax uses a progressive bracket system. Each portion of income is taxed at its bracket rate, not your entire income at the top rate. Effective rate = total tax ÷ gross income.
