Data Storage Converter

Convert between data storage units — bits and bytes up through kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes. Includes the binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) your operating system often uses, so you can see both the decimal (÷1000) and binary (÷1024) answers.

Decimal vs. binary units

Storage is marketed in decimal units: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000 KB, 1 GB = 1,000 MB, and so on. Operating systems often measure in binary units instead: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB, etc. That is why a “1 TB” drive can show as about 931 GiB in your file manager — same storage, different counting base. This converter supports both so the numbers always line up.

Bits vs. bytes

A byte is 8 bits. Storage (file sizes, drives) is measured in bytes (B, KB, MB and up). Data transfer and internet speeds are usually measured in bits (Mbps = megabits per second). Because of the 8x difference, a 100 Mbps connection downloads at roughly 12.5 MB per second.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB are in a GB?

In decimal units, 1 GB = 1,000 MB. In binary units, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. This converter shows either, depending on the units you pick.

Why does my hard drive show less space than advertised?

Manufacturers use decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), while your OS often displays binary units (1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes). A 1 TB drive is about 0.91 TiB — no space is missing, it is just counted differently.

What is the difference between MB and Mb?

MB (megabyte) is 8 times larger than Mb (megabit). File sizes use megabytes; internet speeds use megabits. Divide a Mbps speed by 8 to estimate MB per second.
